JACK CLIMBED THE familiar hill and saw the sycamore tree in the distance. Looking to his left and right, he studied his surroundings as he approached their meeting place. His hand met the rough bark. Pieces broke off and crumbled between his fingers. His arm trailed behind, grazing the rough surface as he walked the circumference of the tree. He was alone. Jack leaned against the tree and slid to a sitting position on the ground. He leaned back, peering into the branches above. The efforts of spring were apparent in the lush green cover above him. He closed his eyes, letting the effects of the rustling leaves, combined with the gentle rush of the wind and warmth of the early morning sun, work their magic on his psyche.

“Start-Up?”

Jack’s eyes shot open. The sun blinded his vision, and he shielded his eyes. “Sam, is that you?”

“Nice morning for a nap, isn’t it?” Sam asked as he scooted in next to Jack.

“I was hoping you’d come.”

“Did you see down below?” Sam pointed ahead.

Jack sat up straighter, and his gaze followed the path Sam indicated.

Jack’s mouth fell open. He turned to Sam. “Where is the mine?”

“This is your party, Jack. You tell me.”

The mine was gone. And there was no evidence of it being destroyed. It just wasn’t there. Jack leaned against the tree once more.

“Hell if I know. I don’t miss it though, and I sure as shit don’t understand it.”

Jack watched as the twinkle in Sam’s eyes danced and took over his face, resulting in a smile.

“How do you do that?”

“Do what exactly?” Sam asked, the remains of his smirk still evident.

“Never mind.” Jack sighed. “I’m just happy to be here, with you.”

Sam ruffled Jack’s hair. “I’ll always be here for you. Now rest, Jack. Then go back and kick some Remeonite ass.”

A smile tugged at Jack’s mouth. “I’ll do that.”
